How much time do you spend worrying about the past or future? How often do you start to mentally self-flagellate because of mistakes made in the past? When you’ve got something to think about, how likely are you to dive straight into all the worst possible scenarios that could happen?

If overthinking is a problem for you, it’s time to take control. The good news is that by understanding what overthinking is, analyzing the root causes of this behavior, and using techniques best suited for particular situations, it can be managed and gradually eliminated.

I’ve put together 16 steps that I hope will help eliminate this destructive force and increase your overall happiness.

As soon as you’re done recording your thoughts, open a new blank document to begin writing down solutions and plans for the overthought issue at hand. This is an amazing way to get out of a cycle of self-destructive thinking…
