A lot of people think that happiness is out there, waiting to be found. They think that if they just work hard enough, become better at their job, earn more money, or do something else they can finally be happy.

But this all might not be true. As it turns out, the best way for people to find happiness is by looking inward and trying to understand themselves better so they can turn inward for what truly makes them happy.

The 10 Biggest Lies We Tell Ourselves About Happiness:

1. Happiness is a destination.

It’s not. True, there are places on Earth where you can run a high probability of being happy just about all the time, but that’s because they have a lot of certain things — great weather, great food, great scenery for instance — and more often than not, these places are far from home and require you to get on a plane to get there.

In other words, they’re out of your control (weather aside). So if you’re waiting for someplace else to be happy when in reality happiness actually lies within you? Well then you’re in for an awfully long wait!

2. Happy people have a very happy life.
