After a long day of work, who doesn’t want a little bit of writing to help them unwind? Writing can soothe your soul and you won’t find many people that disagree with this!
However, people write for a variety of reasons. Actually, there are nine different motivations that make us tick: we write to express ourselves, explore the world around us, create stories or poems or songs or plays; we write as an outlet for our emotions; we write because it’s important to us and not just as an afterthought. And sometimes we need to work up courage before confronting something like grief.
But what about the writer who needs money? Well… fame can be nice but it doesn’t pay the bills. Most writers won’t find a lot of fame in their lifetime and that’s okay if they’ve got a day job, or a spouse/partner, who works to make ends meet.
So what about money? Well, there are nine reasons why writing won’t make you rich.
Reason 9: You don’t need a day job to make a living from writing.
When people ask me “what does a writer do?” the first thing I want to say is that I don’t do anything. The second thing I want to say is, “A writer does whatever she or he wants to do.” Most writers are self-employed. You may not make all the money you think you will, but…
