I’ve been diagnosed with anxiety disorder, PTSD, and agoraphobia. Since the days I started taking medication and then they ran out, I’ve been trying to find ways to heal from the trauma without medication. When all else fails and stress is driving me crazy, I find that writing helps relieve my anxiety.

These 10 methods have helped me in my healing process:

1) Reading

I love reading. I don’t particularly need to read a book, but I do enjoy it especially if it’s a book about healing from trauma. My library has plenty of these books. Recently, I read “The Secret Language of Your Body” by Dr. Herbert Benson and “Feeling Good” by Dr. David Burns. They explained many things about the human body and how we can heal from trauma just by paying attention to our bodies.

2) Affirmations

I bought an affirmation book and have been writing affirmations that are encouraging to myself in situations that cause anxiety for me or just for a pleasant thought when I’m feeling a little down. Writing them is satisfying and empowering, giving me encouragement in growing stronger through this process. Affirmations are a daily reminder of my journey toward happiness.

3) Meditating

I am a writer for one reasons. It’s what I’m meant to do with my life: create worlds, characters who breathe and live off the page with me.
