You know how it feels like your stomach is doing flip-flops and you can’t stop thinking about the discomfort involved in getting a root canal? If you haven’t experienced this level of fear and apprehension before, then you might not understand exactly what we mean.
The good news is that there are ways of subdividing the fear in advance so that it becomes manageable, each one helping to break down some of your anxiety. The following tips provide a great way to approach dealing with the discomfort, especially in advance.
1. Accept that you can either focus on pain or fear and discomfort.
Before you visit your dentist’s office, accept that you can either be focusing on the pain and discomfort involved in having an injection or the fear of having an injection. There is no need to stick to one method of thinking; in fact, it is more effective if you switch back and forth.
For example, when someone comes into your home for a repair job, think about how much you will appreciate the finished product when all is said and done. Accepting this helps you manage the level of discomfort and anger that you might feel in the moment.
