Depression is a broad term that’s often used to describe many different types of negative emotions like sadness and confusion, but some of the most common misconceptions about depression have to do with thinking it’s caused by a lack of ones’ personality or confidence, being inherently weak, or that not having any motivation will inevitably cause someone to have one.

However, for some people suffering from depression, the opposite is true: they may feel more motivated than ever before and still be unable to accomplish anything due to the crippling effects brought on by their illness.

In addition, it’s important not only understanding what causes these feelings but also how they can be treated so as not to prolong suffering.

Here are 10 common misconceptions about depression and what the real causes behind them are:

1. Depressed people are weak.

Depression can be caused by a variety of factors, but surely among the most common is that someone suffering from depression may feel as though they have lost their power in life, or simply feel powerless.

This feeling can often manifest itself in other ways besides just a lack of motivation such as being unable to do basic tasks or even getting out of bed.
