Many people wonder if they are emotionally mature, yet do not know how to identify the telltale signs that this is happening. Emotionally mature adults know how to handle their emotions in healthy ways, which can take a lifetime of practice. (For example, it can take 50 years for someone to heal from childhood trauma.)

They accept responsibility for their feelings instead of blaming others or expecting other people to change. They put others ahead of themselves and focus on building connections with those around them when times are tough.

They also understand they are no longer children and that life is an ongoing process. Wisdom and maturity come with age and experience. Here are 10 signs that you’re emotionally mature:

1. You accept responsibility for your choices

Emotionally mature people make choices for themselves, even if those choices were influenced by their parents or others around them. They do not blame others for their own decisions and actions. They admit when they were wrong and accept the consequences gracefully without blaming others or saying “I told you so.”
