For the last decade or so, a lot of people believe that not having a television in your home will drastically change your life for the better. After all, without it, you get to spend time with family members or hang out with friends instead of sitting on a couch glued to the TV.

You can create memories and laugh more easily because you don’t have “M*A*S*H” running in the background. Television doesn’t compel us to act; it actually makes us passive participants who are often distracted and unproductive.

Here are 10 reasons why you shouldn’t have a TV in your home:

1) Television doesn’t give you anything positive.

Television doesn’t take you anywhere. The mindless entertainment and garbage news gives you nothing in return. TV never inspires you to make a difference or to find a purpose for your life.

It just trains you to be lazy and to pretend that life is always happy and perfect. It makes you feel queasy after you watch an episode of a terrible reality show.

When it’s over, all the feelings of depression come back with a bill for several thousand dollars at the end of each month because it’s hard to imagine anything else but what we were forced to watch on TV.

I am a writer for one reasons. It’s what I’m meant to do with my life: create worlds, characters who breathe and live off the page with me.
